Initiator of Environtmental SME Digital program in Indonesia

As another initiative of the ICSB Indonesia, we are working to enhance synergies between various ministries, including the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (LHK) and the Ministry of Agriculture to support the Waste Bank program, SME Funding program and digital society program by Telkom Indonesia.

We recognize that such collaboration in the field of techno-social is strategic and important to resolving many of the social problems today and generate economic value for society.

Under the SME Digital program, the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs facilitates various needs of SMEs, such as for Garbage Banks and for SMEs Kampung, their digital needs ranging from training institutions, administration and management support as well as capital that can improve their productivity and help their growth throughout the region.

We started with Makassar city that showed readiness to implement the Enviromental SME Digital Program and it was launched by the Vice-President of the Republic of Indonesia, M. Jusuf Kalla on 5th of March, 2016 in Makassar.

Initiator of Horticulture SME Digital Village program in Indonesia

Horticulture SME Digital Village program is a techno-social manifestation which aims to create and facilitate SME businesses in the villages, one of which is the agricultural business, build relationships and network to market the production. The program aims to advance industrialization in the rural regions so as to create more opportunities for businesses to flourish and take advantage of digital technology.

On 17th of October, 2015, the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia designated Modoinding District in North Sulawesi province as the pilot project for the first Horticulture SME Digital Village in Indonesia.

The Initiator of the establisment of Motorcycle Taxi Driver Community known as “Komunitas Ojek Indonesia” or KOI

Motorcycle taxis are a common form of unlicensed transport in Indonesia, where they are known as ojek. They can be found in most areas of the country, from cities and towns where traffic jams commonly hinder other forms of transport, to rural areas inaccessible by four-wheeled vehicles.

Because of traffic, ojek are often the fastest form of transport, especially in Jakarta. Many people choose them over taxicabs, which are safer, but slower and more expensive.

 Since we believe Ojeks to be a type of SME, we support and encourage them to continuously improve their services for their customers by providing them with Marketing and Service training.

This is to prepare them to handle their customers better and improve their service as well as income. Not only through training, we also created a KOI logo for their community so that they can collaborate and took advantage of building communal activity as the basic of establishment of Indonesian Ojek cooperatives.

The declaration was attended by more that 35 Ojek community cordinators in Jakarta and also Hermawan Kartajaya, Jaya Soeprana, Jacky Mussry, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, and the Department of Cooperatives of Jakarta on 7th of October, 2015 at MarkPlus Satrio Campus.

Small Business or Startup?

Small business or startup? Is the main theme of the fourth Asian SME Conference, to be held from September 13 to 17 in Jakarta. As the new president of Asian Council for Small Business (ACSB), elected in June, it is my duty to organize this event in Indonesia. Also in June, Indonesia Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Puspayoga, in the UN headquarters in New York, shared his coaching model for Indonesian Small and Midsized Enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia.

At the same event, Puspayoga also received the Presidential Award on Humane Entrepreneurship from the International Council for Small Business (ICSB), the parent organization of ACSB. Founded 61 years ago and based in Washington, the ICSB today has members from 80 countries and all its events are about how to develop small businesses, both SMEs and startups.

Serving as a Special Adviser to the Minister for nearly two years, I have come to increasingly appreciate the difference between a SME and a startup. SMEs are more reliant on productivity, while startups need creativity. Financing is often considered the primary need for the SMEs, so they expand their production. On the other hand, startups need to identify the right markets and build differentiation.

Globally, China has become such a big economy, because, ultimately, their SMEs can make products at a cheaper price. Meanwhile, in Silicon Valley, globally successful startups began with creative (ie, innovative) technology. So, whether China or Silicon Valley, what’s most important for SMEs and startups is entrepreneurial spirit!

Here are three key points:
(1) Entrepreneurship-Creativity-Productivity (ECP) is the main requirement for growing small businesses. ECP should be combined with Positioning-Differentiation-Branding (PDB) as the core marketing element.
(2) Support for small businesses isn’t just financing but should also be for marketing and operations. Policy makers supporting small businesses should include the activities of NGOs, civil society and philantropists.
(3) Ultimately, the small businesses themselves must develop their own management, leadership and innovation to sustain the business.
Currently, Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), Healthiness of Business Ecosystems (HEBEX) and Humane Entrepreneurship are the three surveys used by the ICSB to monitor the development of small business in countries worldwide. It should be a thought-provoking contribution from Indonesia to Asia, and the world, on developing SMEs and startups.
